Lady Panthers Claim Ten Medals at District Finals Meet

Track 4-11 064The Eastside Memorial Lady Panthers won ten medals at the District 26-4 A Finals meet last Thursday at Nelson Field. The Panthers 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays, Mary Ortiz, Samantha Ortiz, Milca Ekanga and Starr Gilbert, placed fifth in each event. Milca Ekanga and Azalia Perez took individual honors.

The freshman Ekanga finished 6th in the triple jump and Perez placed 4th in JV shotput.

The outcomes marked an incredible turnaround for the program. “Last year we only had three JV girls and no varsity girls competing in the District meet,” said Coach Brian Marshall. “To have this…. it’s a tribute to the girls on the squad. We had three lineup changes for the relays, we had injuries, we had girls leave the team. I’m very proud of their effort, what they accomplished and the adversity they overcame. They gelled and started to work as a team.”
